When to consult a doctor – Sore Throat Symptoms

A Sore Throat is a major problem that is common in the winter season. A sore Throat refers to irritation, itchiness, and pain in the throat. It tends to get worse when you try to swallow food and liquids. It may be caused by the common cold, flu, and strep throat. It can be cured by home remedies in 2 to three days otherwise you should not ignore it and seek for doctor’s advice.

Symptoms of a sore throat may be different depending on the cause and individual. Signs and symptoms may include:

  1. Pain or a rash sensation in the throat
  2. Difficulty while swallowing or talking
  3. Swollen glands, throat in your throat or jaw
  4. Swollen, red tonsils
  5. White patches or pus on your tonsils
  6.  Hoarse voice

Infection due to a sore throat may result in other signs and symptoms, including –

  1. Sneeze
  2. Body ache
  3. running nose
  4. Vomiting 
  5. headache
  6. Fever
  7. Cough

When to Consult a doctor-

Take your child to a doctor, If your child does not have a sore throat with a drink before morning. It is a serious condition if your child has severe signs and symptoms, take care immediately:

  1. Difficulty in breathing
  2. Difficulty in swallowing
  3. Unusual drooling, which might indicate an inability to swallow

If you are an adult, ask your doctor if you have a sore throat and any of the following problems – 

  1. Head and neck surgery
  2. Earache
  3. Shortness of breath
  4. A sore throat that is severe or lasts for more than a week
  5. difficulty swallowing
  6. Blood in your saliva or phlegm
  7. Rash
  8. Difficulty opening your mouth
  9. Joint pain
  10. Fever greater than 101 F (38.3 C)
  11. Hoarseness for more than two weeks
  12. A lump in your neck
